A "whistleblower" is someone who reports waste, fraud, abuse, or dangers to public health and safety to another person in a position to address it. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) is responsible for investigating whistleblower retaliation claims by employees of HHS contractors, subcontractors, grant recipients, and subrecipients (i.e. award recipients). Retaliations include reports that an employee received a personnel action (e.g., a termination, demotion, reassignment, denial of benefits or pay) for reporting wrongdoing or unlawful activity. In this webinar, OIG provides information and training about what are whistleblower protections, who is protected, how retaliation investigations are conducted, and the role of agency contract and grant managers in the whistleblowing process.
